HomeMy WebLinkAbout1-17-23CITY OF APPLE VALLEY LEBANON CEMETERY ADVISORY COMMITTEE January 17, 2023 Minutes of the regular meeting of the Lebanon Cemetery Advisory Committee of Apple Valley, Dakota County, Minnesota, held January 17, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Apple Valley Municipal Center. PRESENT: Tim Anderson, Dave Brueshoff, Tanya Grawe, Dave Kurtz, Alan Kohls. ABSENT: Nancy Anderson City staff members present were: Public Works Director Matt Saam, Streets Superintendent Jeff Lathrop, and Cemetery/Public Works Coordinator Wendy Davis 1. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 2:01 p.m. by Chair Kohls. 2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA MOTION: of D. Brueshoff, seconded by D. Kurtz approving the agenda for today’s meeting as written. 3. AUDIENCE – 10 MINUTES TOTAL TIME LIMIT FOR ITEMS NOT ON THIS AGENDA There was no one present to speak. 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES – October 18, 2022 MOTION: of T. Anderson, seconded by T. Grawe approving the minutes of the October 18, 2022, meeting. 5. NEW/CONTINUED BUSINESS A. 2022 Goals New Columbarium – Mr. Lathrop reported to the committee that staff is working with Oertel Architects in designing structural footings for the first of the planned columbaria. Coldspring, who is manufacturing the columbarium, is hoping to install the first columbarium in May or June of 2023. Mini Excavator – Mr. Lathrop communicated to the committee that in 2023, a mini excavator will be purchased for use at the cemetery and for other City needs. The mini excavator will allow staff to complete in-house digs for traditional burials. Last fall, staff attended a demo and completed a dig at the cemetery, which went well. The initial cost of the mini excavator is estimated to be around $87,000 which will be split among three divisions but will save $850 per traditional burial dig. MOTION: of D. Kurtz seconded by D. Brueshoff approving the proposed 2023 Goals. B. Maintenance Update – Mr. Lathrop reported that due to heavy snow, there has not been an opportunity for maintenance and cleanup of non-regulation items. Any non-regulation items that are present are buried by the snow. The road within the cemetery has narrowed due to the snow, but staff are currently working to remove the snow build up. C. 4th Quarter Activity Report MOTION: of T. Grawe seconded by T. Anderson approving the 4th Quarter Activity Report D. 2022 Cemetery Report MOTION: of D. Brueshoff seconded by T. Grawe, approving the 2022 Cemetery Report. E. Cemetery Advisory Committee Term Expirations Terms of Nancy Anderson, David Brueshoff and Alan Kohls expire March 1, 2023. All have expressed interest in serving another term. 6. COMMUNICATIONS / UPDATES Decorating Guidelines Handout - Discussion was had on one page handout for decorating guidelines. Committee members were in favor of adding the handout to educate purchasers on non-regulation items at the cemetery at the time of purchase. Dave Kemp Committee vacancy – Due to the passing of long-time committee member Dave Kemp, there is a vacancy on the cemetery committee. Council will soon be posting for this committee vacancy. 7. OTHER BUSINESS 8.
