ABSENT: Committee member Robert Naegeli Ghariperson V. Sterling called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Minutes of the August 26, 1980 meeting were approved. PLAY EQUIPMENT SPECIFICATIONS Mike Bassett and Carolyn Rodriguez presented a complete breakdown of play equipment designated for each of the parks. The list contains the number of pieces re,commended for each park along with unit price, total cost and pertinent catalog information. M. Bassett and C. Rodriguez visited each of the parks in order to properly designate the type of equipment most needed per park. The major considerations are to nrovide equipment to allow climbing, baiancing, - 5winging and sliding--all conducive to creative and imaginative play. The equipment considered will provide for single and group play as well as the future needs for development. M. Bassett displayed pictures and designs to serve as examples of types of equipment and their placement in the parks. The modulog system includes swinging equipment in addition to providing a variety of balancing and climbing play. Committee's goal is to publicize bid requests as soon as possible, for the reGuired three-week period, so that bids will not reflect the increased prices of the new calendar year beginning mid-October. Committee will ask City Council ' s aproval for bid requests at the Council 's Sept. llth meeting. Play quipment Discussion Committee member D. Miller pointed out the duplication possibility of the modulog system and the play truss, the latter of which is includEd in the park shelter bid. It may be less costly to choose either the modulog or pTay truss, in particular at Diamond Path and Hagemeister Parks, without losing the aesthetic appearance of the i, overall plan. Committee felt it may be a possibility of eliminating the play truss i f-rom Hagemeister without loss of the overall appearance, however, Diamond Path Park will be a high density area that will easily accommodate both the truss and the play equipment. General consensus is to include the play truss and equipment in both parks at this time. Budget expenditure was discussed--M. Bassett pointing out that monies spent and increased interest accumulated put the park development program under budget. The need for horizontal climbers and/or whirls in parks with existing equipment was discussed--in particular, Wlanut, Duchess, Greening and Pennock parks. It was de- cided horizontal bars could be easily integrated to existing equipment and whirls will also be considered. Adjustable seesaws (teeter totters) will be included at Belmont and Farquar parks, as shown in the Mexico Forge catalog, #400/552• • Park Committee Minutes -2- Septem6er 2, 1980 Play Equipment Cont'd. Minor equipment, which does not need anchoring, will be installed at Faith Park. Palomino Hills' equipment will be held off until the service road construction has been completed. Valley Middle and Hayes Field have adequate equipment at this time. MOTION: by D. Miller, seconded by D. LaComb, to accept the play apparatus as presented, along with the additions and deletions discussed, or comparable substitutes for best quality and use as deemed necessary by each park's availability of space and density use. YES: UNANIMOUS ADDITIONAL PARK DISCUSSION AND ACTION Heritage Hills: M. Bassett stated asphalt parking area, path and sign could easily be installed and carried as an extra expense item. MOTION: by C. Rodriguez, seconded by D. Miller, to install an asphalt parking lot and path and sign to Heritage Hills Park. YES: UNANIMOUS Alimagnet, Keller, 'lalnut Pennock: Grills are being considered for these parks. D. Miller does not recommend placing grills on the hill at Alimagnet Park. R. Gutenkauf suggested ordering grills and installing a few to test best usage and placement. U. Sterling mentioned restroom facilities, at Alimagnet, were in dire need of clean up over the Labor Day holiday. The committee decided a review and update of park policy regarding building ctean up will be scheduled for a future meeting. It was noted, Southview and Galaxie warming houses have a clean up schedule at this time. A key checkout plan was discussed with buildings locked at curfew. M. Bassett may have some ideas for repair of existing water fountains (bubblers) . The new design of water fountains may deter tampering. Covers will be provided for the 55 gallon trash drums and ptastic bags should improve the messy garbage situation. M. Bassett also introduced the possibility of purchasing sign routing equipment for in-house use. Barricades, such as posts or a gate with chains, will be considered at Hayes Field along Strese to provide safety and lawn protection for nearby residents. An additional 40 picnic tables, scheduled for Summer ' 81 installation at an approximate cost of $90, is well under original budget plans. Benches were discussed per catalog examples ranging in price from $86 - $135. The metal straight legs with wooden seats are being considered to provide more stability and are less susceptible to bending. Ordering the benches will prove less costly than individual construction and, with i a large order, reduction of shipping costs is possible. ' • Park Committee Minutes -3- September 2, 1980 Paths at Long Lake Park will be checked out to provide a clear trail . Greenelaf and Farquar are scheduledfor asphalt game courts. Committee agreed to meet Wed. , Sept. 3 at 12:00 p.m. to tour parks. MOTION: by D. Miller, seconded by D. LaComb, at 9: 15 p.m. to adjourn the meeting.
