Mr. Nordquist answered that funds are not set aside yet but he identified sources for this work. He said a communications person for the City would be a new position for 2019. Ms. Sohlberg added that employees will not have a lot of time to take this on and said for example like the parade committee — that the person tasked with the job would need to attend those parade committee meetings. Mr. Vegter asked is there would need to be an outside contractor first before a new staff person could be up to speed on this project. Mr. Nordquist commented he was asked to engage City departments directly. Mr. Wahlum asked how it is known that these departments are working on anything. Mr. Nordquist replied that committee ideas were summarized to the City Council at an informal meeting on August 23, 2018. He said the City has a volunteer coordinator that could be a resource. It is a part-time position. There could be community service projects that could be assigned to different departments. He added there are also leaders in the community that could be used as a resource. Ms. Sohlberg asked how the City goes about to hire a marketing person. Mr. Vegter recommended getting somebody engaged sooner than later. Mr. Nordquist said the business community could be brought in such as Chamber President Ed Kearney to convey the role of the Apple Valley Chamber of Commerce and what they are doing in their 50`h year. Discussion led into the color of the lapel pin and if it should it be red or gold. Mr. Nordquist added that the City Council thought the shape of the apple should be taller and not round. Mr. Mahlum asked how this became a pin when they were originally designing a logo. Mr. Nordquist replied that the creation was to be something that can be used on a pin also for marketing purposes. Mr. Vegter thought the "est" is too old school and suggested the word "since". Ms. Schwartz asked why are we focusing on gold if we are not focusing on 50 years and suggested that the color could go back to red. Mr. Nordquist asked if the committee saw the need to have the outline of the shape of Minnesota. CITY OF APPLE VALLEY Dakota County, Minnesota Urban Affairs Advisory Committee Minutes August 28, 2018 Page 3 of 4 Everyone replied no. Ms. Schwartz said there is no perpetuity in the gold color pin after the 50th and suggested it should be a red colored pin. Mr. Vegter referred to the red apple logo they designed and suggested to take the words "50 years" off. Ms. Schwartz said the outline of the shape of the state of Minnesota makes the logo/pin too busy and asked if the copyright on the logo needs to be on there because she thought it looks too distracting. Ms. Sohlberg said she thinks the red apple has pizazz. Ms. Sohlberg left the meeting at 7:37 p.m. and commented she is in favor of a red pin and a approving a marketing person. Mr. Nordquist said the vendor suggested a pin and not to hand it out in a bag but have it attached to a story card such as the calendar of events. Ms. Blake suggested using an historical fact sheet and put the pin on there to be handed out. Ms. Schwartz said gold is less intrusive if it is to be worn. Mr. Nordquist said that adding "est. 1969" would be on the pin. Mr. Mahlum said he thought several months earlier that the committee was only trying to create a logo not a lapel pin. Ms. Schwartz commented she does not like the "est. 1969" at the bottom of the design and thought the leaf was to be to the right side not the left side. Mr. Nordquist said he sees a need for a marketing person. Ms. Schwartz suggested an independent contractor to fill in the time between now and January 2019 when a marketing person comes on board. MOTION: Vegter moved, seconded by Mahlum recommending to use consulting resources to jump start facilitation of the 2019 50th year activities. Ayes - 4 - Nays - 0. MOTION: Mahlum moved, seconded by Blake recommending having both a print version of a taller red apple and creating a pin attached to a story card/calendar of events. Ayes - 4 - Nays - 0.
