CITY OF APPLE VALLEY
URBAN AFFAIRS ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES
June 25, 2019
1. CALL TO ORDER
The City of Apple Valley Urban Affairs Advisory Committee meeting was called to order by Chair
Sharon Schwartz at 6:00 p.m.
Members Present: Sharon Schwartz, Sandy Breuer, Walton Mahlum, Pamela Sohlberg and John
Vegter.
Members Absent: Ann Arens and Linda Blake
Staff Present: Community Development Director Bruce Nordquist, Planner/Economic
Development Specialist Alex Sharpe and Department Assistant Joan Murphy.
2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Chair Schwartz asked if there were any changes to the agenda. Hearing none she called for a
motion.
MOTION: Mahlum moved, seconded by Breuer, approving the agenda. Ayes - 4 - Nays - 0.
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES May 28, 2019.
Chair Schwartz asked if there were any changes to the minutes. Pam Sohlberg noted a correction
needed.
MOTION: Breuer moved, seconded by Sohlberg, approving the minutes of the meeting of May
28, 2019 with one correction. Ayes - 4 - Nays - 0.
4. ACTION ITEMS

5. OTHER BUSINESS
A. Staff Updates
A-1. Update on Census
Chair Schwartz created a Q & A related to the 2020 Census that staff included as part of tonight’s
packet for the committee. The information was going to be put in the City’s newsletter that is
distributed to residents. Discussion led to a couple comments on the Q & A page that were
confusing with the complete count terminology. Suggestions were discussed and staff would

update the page before it goes to print for the City newsletter. Staff and Committee thanked Chair
Schwartz for the thorough Q & A she submitted.
John Vegter arrived at 6:15 p.m.
Alex Sharpe will be in contact with the Census Bureau and said more materials will be available
when the Census Bureau has them available. He added that he had reached out to Independent
School District 196 and they will be adding census information in their district newsletter.
Discussion led to community groups besides the churches and school district that could get the word
out and encourage participation. Suggestions were the Rotary, American Legion, The Open Door
Pantry, Apple Valley Senior Center and senior apartments.

A-2. Update on 50 Year Celebration
Mr. Nordquist reported that the bus would be wrapped for six months. He showed the route the bus
uses to promote visibility in the metro and that the bus would be in the Apple Valley Freedom Days
Parade. He added that the banner is now displayed on the outside wall of the Municipal Center.
A-3. Update on Apple Valley Sustainability Initiatives
Mr. Nordquist said the feedback from the City Council was to refer this topic to the Urban Affair
Committee and that the City Council is not interested in having another ad hoc committee review
sustainability initiatives.
Discussion led to the GreenStep program, workshops, best management practices, environmental
awareness topics and what initiatives could be put in place for the community.
A-4. Discussion about Bagster Trash Removal
Mr. Nordquist introduced the topic of bagsters and the popularity of its use in the community. He
described how they work and that some homeowners are not having the bagsters removed on a
timely fashion. Mr. Sharpe will be working with the City Attorney to update the current ordinance
after input from the Urban Affairs Advisory Committee.
6. Adjourn
Hearing no further comments from the Urban Affairs Advisory Committee, Chair Schwartz asked
for a motion to adjourn.
MOTION: Vegter moved, seconded by Mahlum to adjourn the meeting at 8:33 p.m. Ayes - 5 -
Nays - 0.
